Review: Wendy's - Bacon Fondue Fries

Wendy's Bacon Fondue Fries feature an order of natural-cut, sea salt fries topped with Swiss Gruyere sauce and bits of applewood-smoked bacon.

I picked up an order for $1.99.

It's hit or miss but my fries were on the soft side this time around. They have a nice potato flavor and a good thickness to hold up against any topping though.

The Gruyere sauce was thick and creamy with an enjoyable but very mild profile with just a touch of bitterness similar to Swiss cheese. Paired with the fries, it worked quite well but it didn't fare so well against the more powerful taste of the bacon which covered up much of its nuances.

The last time I tried bacon topped fries at Wendy's, the bits were more like torn pieces, which is nice for flavor but not so much if you're trying to spread the bacon love among your fries. This time, the bacon came in proper crunchy bits that added a nice (and frequent) pop of smoky porky flavor where encountered.

Overall, Wendy's Bacon Fondue Fries were pretty good (and would have been really good with properly crispy fries). The Gruyere sauce added a interesting subtle flavor that I haven't encountered from a fast food chain although it would be better showcased without the bacon (even though I love bacon and Wendy's does bacon really well).
