Taco Bell's Breakfast Quesalupa features bacon (or sausage) plus egg, crispy potatoes, nacho cheese sauce, and shredded cheddar cheese on a Chalupa-like shell stuffed with melted pepper jack cheese.
I picked one up for
$2.99.
The Breakfast Quesalupa felt like there was more heft to it than similarly-priced
Biscuit Taco (in fact, if you add potatoes to the Biscuit Taco, it'll cost you more than the Breakfast Quesalupa). Part of it was due to the potatoes but it also seemed like there was more bacon, egg, and cheese as well.
The addition of the not-so-crispy potatoes gave the filling a scramble hash feel. Each of the components were well-accounted for, especially the (also not crispy) bacon, which added a lot of smoky flavor. The warm nacho cheese sauce added a nice creamy undertone as well as just a slight kick to match the pepper jack.
The fillings general lack of crispiness was somewhat made up for by the slightly crispy Quesalupa shell. Like the previous ones I've tried, the melted pepper jack was concentrated pretty much exclusively at the fold where it delivered a fried quesadilla quality. The rest of the shell was cheese-less but still mustered up a flaky, chewy, fried texture (I've sampled four Quesalupa shells to-date and three of them turned out well but the fourth was stale; from
comments left on the original Quesalupa review, there seem to be some quality control hiccups with these).
The combination of the cheese on and in the shell gives the Breakfast Quesalupa an extra cheesiness over anything else on Taco Bell's breakfast menu.
Overall, I liked all the flavors of the Breakfast Quesalupa and really enjoyed the extra textures that the new cheese-stuffed shell provided. It would be somewhat nice if either the bacon or potatoes turned out crispy though.
I would not mind it at all if they were to double stuff the Quesalupa shell and sell it as a fried quesadilla (maybe they could call it the "Chimichanga Quesadilla").
