Rather than their typical standing fry container, the Garlic Fries come in an open paper tray and feature locally-grown garlic from nearby Gilroy, a city known for its garlic and Garlic Festival.
The dish features the chain's signature fries tossed in a puree mix that includes Gilroy garlic, olive oil, parmesan, salt, and parsley.
Here's one person's Twitter sentiments regarding the new fries (as well as a closer look):
What the hell, Gilroy garlic fries from McDonald's?...they're not bad pic.twitter.com/GZLznt5Mst— nii-san (@ecchisukecchi) April 21, 2016
I wouldn't mind seeing more McDonald's items getting the localized treatment.
Update 5/3/2016: According to the company, the fries are being tested in only four locations in the South Bay as "part of a trend at McDonald's to experiment with regional flavors and food on its menu," but could expand to nearly 250 San Francisco Bay Area restaurants in August if the test goes well.
