Frozen Friday: Pillsbury - Peanut Butter & Mixed Berry Toaster Strudel

Pillsbury's Peanut Butter & Mixed Berry Toaster Strudel is a limited edition variety that features a flaky toaster pastry with a mixed berry filling and peanut butter-flavored icing.

I bought a 11.7-oz box for $2.50 on sale.

The crust comes out quite nicely from the toaster, there's a bit of a oily crispiness to it that brought a fresh donut to mind.

The mixed berry is a combination of strawberry and blueberry and was a little more tart than I'd like with a PB&J sandwich. Consistency-wise, it's somewhere between jam and jelly. The center seemed to contain more of a puree, while the sides were smoother.

It was going all so well until I tried to do the teeth...
The icing was somewhat like peanut butter in taste and consistency but it's actually artificially flavored and contains no actual peanuts. It's close in taste but doesn't quite have that roasted nutty feeling and the consistency is of a more spreadable icing.

Even combined, the filling and the icing are just moderately sweet. Much less so than a frosted Pop-Tart or your run-of-the-mill breakfast pastry (i.e. a cinnamon roll or Danish and the like).

Still, Pillsbury's Peanut Butter & Mixed Berry Toaster Strudel didn't quite hit the right notes for me in the PB&J department. While I like Toaster Strudels in general, the overall peanut butter and mixed berry combination was lackluster. I did like that the sweetness level wasn't so much as to hit dessert territory though.
