Taco Bell's Naked Chicken Chalupa features a taco shell made of four ounces of marinated, white meat chicken (raised without antibiotics important to human medicine) covered in a crispy, deep-fried shell. The shell comes filled with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheddar cheese, and creamy avocado ranch.
I paid
$2.99 for one.
The Naked Chicken Chalupa is basically Taco Bell's take on boneless fried chicken but with familiar Taco Bell toppings. You can also consider it to be somewhat like a reverse chicken salad (heavy on the chicken and light on the salad) that you can pick up and eat.
The chicken shell wasn't super crunchy but had a light crispiness to it. It's made with ground chicken but still managed a meaty, resilient texture while remaining juicy. Compared to a regular Chalupa or taco, it's unsurprisingly, but pleasantly, more meat-forward.
There's a nice, seasoned flavor to the crispy chicken breading as well as a fair amount of spicy but short-lasting heat. The avocado ranch complemented the chicken well and also provided a cooling effect against the spiciness.
The lettuce and tomatoes were a little sparse on my particular Naked Chicken Chalupa and I wouldn't recommend driving too far before you dig in--the heat from the chicken shell turned both the lettuce and tomatoes all wilted and mushy (but the cheese was nicely melted).
Taken altogether, Taco Bell's Naked Chicken Chalupa made for some pretty good eats. The chicken shell turned out really well and I enjoyed the combination of flavors. I would probably just eat it at the restaurant next time though (and ask them to pile on the lettuce!).
It's a shame they don't carry green onions at Taco Bell anymore as you could make a loaded chicken taco-type of deal by having them fill the chicken shell with sour cream, cheese, bacon, and green onions.
