Review: IHOP - Red Velvet French Toast

IHOP's Red Velvet French Toast features a slice of chocolaty, cake-like French toast topped with cream cheese icing.

I got a slice as part of a combo with eggs, hash browns, and sausage for $7.69 (You can also get it a la carte for $4.99).

Like a number of breakfast items (let alone breakfast-dessert mash ups), the Red Velvet French Toast is basically morning dessert.
There was a nice crisp crust on some of the edges and a thin layer of egg underneath as if to say, "Hey! This is French toast." Beyond that, it's pretty much like eating a slice of red velvet cake. The surface was dark enough to almost pass for a slice of chocolate pound cake but breaking into the piece revealed an apparent shade of red.

There's a fairly rich, deep chocolate note to the cake as opposed the more mellow chocolaty note I'm used with red velvet. Texture-wise, it was cooked through but almost wet (perhaps from soaking in batter?). On the plus side, it was definitely moist but veered a little too far in that direction at times.

The cream cheese icing completes the red velvet theme. It was creamy and sweet with just a bit of a tang, which is to say it was pretty good.

When it comes down to it, IHOP's Red Velvet French Toast turned out rather well. If you're a fan of red velvet cake or just want a warm, decadent slice of chocolaty goodness, it's worth a try.
