Kroger Prime Rib & Horseradish Wavy Potato Chips feature a seasoning blend that purports to taste of slow-roasted beef and its classic sauce pairing. Despite being prime rib-flavored, there is no beef listed in the ingredients.
A 9-oz. bag cost me
$1.99.
The chips don't smell very much like horseradish, but there is a definite meaty aroma. Texture-wise, the chips have a pleasant airiness to them and a solid crunch.
Strangely, these chips taste strongly of the acrid flavor of horseradish but with none of the signature nasal-clearing spice. It's peculiar and a bit disappointing to me because I was looking forward to that zip.
The initial taste of horseradish fades quickly into a pleasantly savory flavor that reminds me of beef gravy or pan drippings from a roast. I wouldn't say that it tastes particularly beefy, however it is quite strong.
These chips can get salty very fast from the strong seasoning. The flavor leave a savory, onion-forward aftertaste that lingers for quite some time.
I enjoyed the Prime Rib & Horseradish Wavy Potato Chips more than I expected to. I've had some
unpleasant experiences with
meat-flavored chips in the past, so I'm always a little cautious trying new meat-inspired flavors. Thankfully, these tasted more like a delicious beef gravy that's heavy on the onion and with mysteriously mild horseradish flavor. I'd definitely grab these again since I'm a sucker for savory, strong flavors.
