Review: Hostess - Bigger, Creamier Suzy Q's

Hostess recently altered the recipe for their Suzy Q's, which consist of two rectangular pieces of chocolate cake sandwiching a layer of creme.

I bought a 15.66-oz box of six cakes for $2.99 on sale.

The packaging boasts "50% more cake" and "50% more creme" compared to before. There were eight snack cakes previously but they were smaller overall.

Compared to Hostess' other signature snack cakes (Twinkies, Ding Dongs, CupCakes, etc.), Suzy Q's skews a bit more creme heavy and the latest version carries a bit more creme than the last. It makes for a fairly nice, if messy, effect and feels very much like eating cake with frosting.

The cake itself wasn't overly dense or dry and, if it's not super chocolaty, it's chocolaty enough. The vanilla creme looks to be a little thicker than what you find in a Twinkie or Ding Dong. It tends to ooze out the sides as you bite into the cake so you may wish to have a napkin or two handy.

Overall, Hostess' new rendition of Suzy Q's turned out quite nicely. I especially like the creme filling, which hit the right amount of sweetness to go with the chocolate cake.
