Review: Krispy Kreme - Reese's Outrageous Donut

Krispy Kreme's Reese's Outrageous Donut features a chocolate yeast ring donut that is glazed and then dipped in Hershey's chocolate fudge icing, topped with mini Reese's Pieces candies, a Reese's peanut butter drizzle, and a salted caramel drizzle.

These donuts are based on the new Reese's Outrageous candy bars. Each donut costs a little over $1 usually, but I received this courtesy of Krispy Kreme.

Considering the amount of toppings on the donut, it's no surprise that these can be quite messy when eaten. This is definitely not an on-the-go donut you can eat while driving (unless you're very talented).

Krispy Kreme's frosted donuts come with a layer of their original glaze underneath, which certainly ups the sweetness level. The Reese's peanut butter drizzle was salty and tasted a lot like regular peanut butter, but the caramel drizzle got lost in the shuffle. The Reese's Pieces candies added an extra note of sweet peanut butter along with some textural interest. The Hershey's chocolate fudge icing has a mild cocoa flavor that takes a back note to all of the peanut butter-flavored elements.

Aside from the color, I would not have been able to discern that it was a chocolate yeast ring instead of the standard dough; it's a shame, as you don't often get chocolate yeast dough with Krispy Kreme limited-time donuts. The chocolate flavor comes across in cake donuts a lot better.

Overall, the Reese's Outrageous Donut was an explosion of flavor on the tongue, with a strong note of pure sugar underlying everything. True to the namesake candy bar, the donut does boast an outrageous amount of toppings but still honors the classic chocolate and peanut butter combo. I enjoyed the flavor of the donut but did suffer a bit of a sugar crash afterwards.
