Review: Pizza Hut - New Original Pan Pizza

Pizza Hut's new Original Pan Pizza is meant to have a new crispier crust as well as a "more flavorful" blend of sauce and cheese.

I paid $9.99 for 3-topping large as my local Pizza Hut is not participating in the 2-topping large carryout pizza for $7.99 promotion.

For toppings, I went with pepperoni, sausage, and mushrooms.

It's been so long since I've had Pizza Hut's Original Pan Pizza and my memory of it is a bit fuzzy, but I'll do my best to compare the two.

The new crust seems lighter and less oily but also felt less crispy than the previous pan pizza. The crumb (inside) was dense and fairly uniform with small bubbles. Add in that it was soft and it reminded me of a fried sponge bread.

A far as the blend of sauce and cheese went, the sauce was less sweet and there seemed to be more cheese than before. The cheese actually exhibited a pretty nice gooey stretch.

As before, Pizza Hut's Original Pan Pizza is unlike any other pizza style I've eaten, and I would liken it more to a fried breadstick than pizza though. The new changes are mostly positive. I liked the cheese and sauce better and also liked the lighter, less oily quality of the crust. I'd still go for Little Caesars' Deep Dish Pizza (crunchy and chewier) or Domino's Handmade Pan Pizza (softer and more flavorful) over it, though.
