Review: My/Mo - Pumpkin Spice Mochi Ice Cream

My/Mo Pumpkin Spice Mochi Ice Cream features a ball of pumpkin spice ice cream surrounded by a shell of soft mochi (rice cake).

A 9.1-oz box of six carries a suggested price of $5.99 but I received this courtesy of My/Mo.

The ice cream offered a pleasant, lightly-spiced pumpkin pie flavor with a rich creaminess. A quick glance at the ingredient revealed pumpkin puree, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves (as well as graham cracker crumbs but I didn't really pick any notes of that up while eating) among the ingredients.

It might be due to my freezer but the middle was super cold (but not icy) even after letting it sit for a minute before eating like the box suggests (you'll notice in the cross section photo that the ice cream that melted when I cut into it froze right back over). The mochi ice cream was a bit hard to bite into with the coldness but it would be pretty messy to lick or nibble I think.

The mochi is similar to an Asian dumpling skin but slightly chewier with more stretch to it. It would normally be very sticky (a traditional way to make it is to take steamed sticky rice and pound it until smooth) but there's a dusting of flour or starch to prevent it.

Texture-wise, it's soft, yielding and quite squishy. Soft and chewy as it is, it's sturdy enough to hold the ice cream without any leakage (then again, these are almost bite-sized so it's not like it's going to take very long to eat one). The flavor is a subtle blend of rice and sugar.

Taken altogether, My/Mo Pumpkin Spice Mochi Ice Cream hits the right notes in terms of pumpkin pie flavor and gives the added bonus of satisfying mochi texture.
