Home Run Inn's Meat Lovers Pizza comes topped with sausage, uncured pepperoni, and uncured bacon.
I bought
two 32-oz, 12" pizzas for $9.99 during a "buy one, get one free" sale at Sprouts (which is the only supermarket that carries these in my area).
Surprisingly, the pizza came out of the oven looking as if I had bought it from a restaurant. Particularly, the crust was browned, both the bacon and the pepperoni sported some crispy edges, and the cheese was both melted and browned. I'm more used to frozen pizzas coming out of the oven with the crust browned but the cheese only just melted and the toppings only just cooked.
They went with whole milk mozzarella and it had a really satisfying stretch and pull to it.
The pizza sauce was robust and fairly sweet but just slightly on the heavy side in terms of application. Interestingly, there isn't any sugar added to the sauce. According to the box, it's just a blend of "tomatoes, salt, water, spices (oregano, salt, black pepper)." I'm thinking they must had gotten some really ripe tomatoes for that flavor and sweetness.
The pepperoni was crispy without being dry and had just a slight spiciness to it, while the bacon offered an ideal combination of chew and crunch to go with a meaty smokiness.
The crust seems like it would be polarizing for some. I wouldn't consider it a traditional pizza crust. It's a flaky, almost pie-like crust with a buttery richness to it--like a rich combination of cracker-bread-ish thin-crust and pie crust. The end crust differed from the rest with a hard crunch and a bit of crumbliness. I don't believe I've encountered a similar crust in a pizza before but it actually works out really well. Frozen pizzas, even the rising-type of crust kind, never manage to quite capture that fresh-bread feel (although some brands get pretty close) but some frozen pies do a great job of presenting a fresh-pie crust quality and so it is here. It is a little greasier than your typical pizza crust though.
When it comes down to it, Home Run Inn's Meat Lovers Pizza made for excellent pizza-eating. It is the
best frozen pizza I've ever eaten and I would get it over a number of chain pizzas, especially when there's a BOGO sale.
