The test menu item features all-white meat chicken strips marinated in a jalapeno buttermilk-flavored marinade and rolled in a crunchy tortilla chip coating. Crispy Tortilla Chicken comes served with either new Creamy Chili Ranch, Avocado Ranch, or Creamy Chipotle for dipping. It is also featured in a soft taco (with lettuce, tomato, Avocado Ranch, and cheese).
According to Taco Bell, they tested about 100 versions of fried chicken before coming up with this one.
The chain plans to launch Crispy Tortilla Chicken nationwide in 2020. Prices during the test come out to $1.99 for a taco, $2.99 for two tenders, and $3.99 for three tenders. Crispy Tortilla Chicken is also featured in $5 and $7 Boxes. The $5 Box includes A Crispy Tortilla Chicken Tacos, a crunchy taco, a Beefy 5-Layer Burrito, and a medium fountain drink. The $7 Box includes two Crispy Tortilla Chicken Tacos, chips & nacho cheese sauce, a Beefy 5-Layer Burrito, and a medium fountain drink.
Taco Bell has previously tested another version of tortilla-crust fried chicken strips back in 2014 and has offered similar crispy chicken strips in several limited-time menu items including Biscuit Tacos and the Spicy Ranch Crispy Chicken Griller. They've also offered fried chicken as a taco shell and as chips.
