Review: McDonald's - Double Big Mac

Side view of McDonald's Double Big Mac.

McDonald's Double Big Mac features four beef patties surrounding a middle bun along with lettuce, Mac sauce, onions, pickles, and a single slice of American cheese on a sesame seed bun. It is basically the Big Mac but with four patties instead of two.

I bought a Double Big Mac for $5.99 (which is $1 more than a Big Mac).

It's a bit of a headscratcher to double up on beef patties and not even add one more slice of cheese and my Double Big Mac suffered for it. Unless I was biting an edge with cheese sticking out (i.e. the cheese was the first thing to hit my tongue), I couldn't taste the cheese at all. It was somewhat melted though.

The lack of cheese also made eating the burger a bit unwieldy as cheese sometimes serves as a glue to hold a burger together. Here, the beef patties and middle bun slid against each other and strove to exit the burger as I was eating. It's an issue with the regular Big Mac as well but the two extra patties made it worse. Even when I placed my hand behind the burger, the beef patties started moving to the right and left as I ate.

The beef definitely made for the meatiest Big Mac that I've had but it wasn't all that flavorful other than a rather dull beefiness. It's helped along by the creamy, sweet, and tangy Mac Sauce, which provided the bulk of the flavor for the burger.

The lettuce wasn't all that crisp or fresh but added a slight bit of texture, while the bun was soft and spongy but durable. The onions didn't do much but the pickles added a bit of crunch and a sour bite.

McDonald's Double Big Mac cross-section.

The end result is that McDonald's Double Big Mac somehow turned out a little worse than the regular Big Mac. While a dollar more for two extra beef patties is a relative bargain, the oversight of not tossing in at least an extra slice of cheese rendered the lone slice fairly useless. For the same price at McDonald's, I'd rather get the Double Quarter Pounder, which offers juicier and more flavorful beef patties, plus more cheese (although it doesn't look like you can add Mac Sauce to it in their ordering app currently).
