Hostess Iced Lemon Cupcakes feature lemon-flavored yellow cake with a sweet, citrus-flavored creme filling, topped with yellow icing and the Hostess squiggle.
It cost me
$2.99 for a 12.7-oz box of eight individually-wrapped cupcakes.
From the cake to the cream to the icing, there was a varying degree of lemon flavor to every part of the cupcake save for the signature squiggle. The taste seemed most intense in the icing and less so in the cake. If you're looking for something tart or tangy in a lemon cake, you're not going to find it here--the flavor was definitely that of lemon zest rather than any lemon juice.
Texture-wise, the cake was fairly moist as far as snack cakes go with a somewhat dense crumb. The icing was hardened rather than soft and waxy. The creme filling was smooth and light but a little greasy, which is fairly typical of any Hostess creme I've had.
Overall, Hostess Iced Lemon Cupcakes were fairly enjoyable. I tend to like a bit of tart or sour for lemon cake but these were nice enough with a fairly robust lemon zest quality.
