Krispy Kreme trots out a set of Halloween-themed donuts each year to help celebrate the holiday. This year, they went with a monsters theme that they've calling, "Scary Sweet Monster Donuts."
The chain was kind enough to send me a dozen to sample so I thought I'd give you an idea of what to expect:
The donuts feature a Frankenstein's monster donut ("Frank"), a vampire donut ("Drake"), and a wolfman donut ("Wolfie"). Krispy Kreme has also decorated some of their regular donuts in Halloween colors.
In terms of filling and toppings, there's nothing new here. The icing comes in various colors but are mostly just plain sweet icing except for the Wolfie Monster Donut, which comes with chocolate icing and is decorated with Chocolate Kreme to boot. Two of the trio of Monster Donuts come with a different filling while the last has no filling: Frank is filled with Original Kreme, Drake with raspberry filling, and Wolfie is left without.
The pretzel "bolts" of the Frank Monster Donut and the cinnamon sugar "ears" of the Wolfie Monster Donut were a bit stale. I should also note that the sugar piece eyes (or face in Wolfie's case) of the donuts are basically sugar cubes. As such, they are quite crunchy and sweet but are also lacking in flavor. They're really not something that I'd actually want to eat on a donut.Basically, the donut are pretty cute but otherwise fairly standard taste-wise.
