The key feature of the Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco is new crispy tortilla chicken, which is white-meat chicken marinated in jalapeno buttermilk, seasoned with "bold Mexican spices," and rolled in a crunchy tortilla chip coating before taking a dunk in the deep fryer. It (or something similar to it) was actually tested in 2019 as a chicken tenders-type item with a planned launch for 2020 but then the pandemic happened. With the delay, it looks like Taco Bell is pivoting to take in account the current trend of new fast food fried chicken sandwiches that started with Popeyes.
The Crispy Chicken Sandwich Taco comes in two varieties: regular and spicy. Both include a folded puffy bread (in taco fashion) filled with a piece of crispy tortilla chicken and creamy chipotle sauce. The spicy version throws in jalapeno slices for extra heat.
The new menu item will be priced at $2.49 during testing. According to Taco Bell, they plan on other yet-to-be-revealed crispy chicken items this year.
Taco Bell has offered various forms of crispy-fried chicken in the past on a limited time basis and, at least in appearance, the Crispy Chicken Sandwich seems most similar to the Biscuit Taco they introduced back in 2015.
