Blake's kept it really simple for their shepherd's pie as there's no meaty gravy or tomato-y sauce to be found here and only corn rather than a mix of corn, peas, and carrots. Instead, for a little bit of tang, they made their mashed potatoes with sour cream.
With relatively few ingredients, there was a creaminess and tangy note from the mashed potatoes, a lightly -seasoned meaty quality from the beef, and some sweetness from the corn.
The mashed potatoes were fairly thick and smooth. The beef was almost a fine shred that lacked that grainy quality you sometimes get with ground beef--it made for a interesting and tender mouth feel. The corn was decently plump.
While the individual components turned out pretty well, Blake's Shepherd's Pie lacked any bold flavor. It's still enjoyable in a mild sort of way but really wants for a gravy or sauce (or at least some extra seasoning).
