A Look at Krispy Kreme's 2021 Fourth of July Donut Collection

Krispy Kreme's 2021 Fourth of July Donut collection consists of four donuts: the Freedom Ring Donut, Patriotic Sprinkled Ring Donut, the Strawberry Shortcake Donut, and the Patriotic Eagle Donut.

It's $16.99 for the Patriotic Dozen in my area (versus $15.49 for a regular assorted dozen) but I received this courtesy of Krispy Kreme.

Beyond the designs, there's not anything new here in terms of flavors.

The Freedom Ring Donut is an Original Glazed donut decorated with icing stripes and sprinkles to look like an American flag. However, it has a lot of stars and not all that many stripes.

The Patriotic Sprinkled Ring Donut is an Original Glazed donut dipped in white icing and topped with red, white & blue sprinkles, which means it tastes like a plain sprinkled donut.

The Strawberry Shortcake Donut is a donut filled with Strawberry Kreme, dipped in red icing, flecked with gold stars, and topped with a Kreme dollop and shortbread crumbles. The gold stars almost purely decorative and don't make much of an impact in taste or texture. The crumbles were a little stale. The Strawberry Kreme had a sweet and tart strawberry flavor. It's a little bit thinner than the Cookies & Kreme.

The Patriotic Eagle Donut is a donut filled with Cookies & Kreme filling, dipped in blue icing, decorated with red and white stripes, and topped with a patriotic eagle sugar piece. The Cookies & Kreme filling offered a just a hint of chocolaty flavor, a fine grit of cookie dust, and a note of sweet vanilla. A sugar piece tends to find its way into Krispy Kreme's various limited-time donut collections. If you haven't ever had one, it's a shaped sugar cube. I appreciate that the filled donuts aren't both glazed and iced as I find the combination too sweet for my tastes.
