I went and bought an order for $3.49.
While technically a topping, the crispy-fried chicken pieces were present more for textural variety and served as another medium to be topped like the French fries. The chicken basically consisted of a chicken tender that had been roughly cut up. The pieces remained crispy without and moist within. They were salty with a lightly-seasoned flavor
Unfortunately, the thin shoestring fries did not hold up as well and were mostly soft from steaming. Jack in the Box's curly fries and potato wedges probably would have worked out in terms of holding more of against the moisture and heat of the toppings.
The Spicy Mystery Sauce started with a sweet mayo note that gave way to a tangy, punchy hot sauce type of flavor. It was quite spicy and had a bit of that heat that had me choking a little when I breathed in the aroma wrong. Between the sauce and the slightly-crunchy pickled jalapenos, the Spicy Roost Fries sometimes got a little too tangy.
There wasn't all that much cheese but it provided a mild distraction from the spicy elements as well as a slight cooling effect.
Overall, Jack in the Box's Spicy Roost Fries were just okay for me. The fries were not so great and the combination of toppings were a little sparse and missing something beyond heat and tang. I liked the chicken tender pieces though.
