They're normally around $4.79 for a 4.75-oz bag but I received these courtesy of Lay's.
Lay's Layers have a texture and feel similar to Bugles. They're crunchy and fairly airy but not so much as Cheetos cheese puffs. In comparison to cheese puffs, they're crunchier and a bit sturdier with less air pockets.
While they look to have a hollow, cylinder-like shape on the bag with a wavy layer running through the center, they're more like a puffed up pillow shape with two open ends and a flapping extra pillow sheet in the middle. There's some ridges to the surface for extra texture.
Flavor-wise, there's a Pringles-like fried potato taste as the base. In terms of seasoning, Lay's Layers hit a middle ground between the bold flavor of Doritos and the milder flavor of "better-for-you"-type snacks.
The Sour Cream & Onion Lay's Layers offer a nice balance between the sour cream and onion notes with a light touch of herbs thrown in.
The Three Cheese Lay's Layers offer a combination of parmesan, cheddar, and gouda. The parmesan and cheddar hit at the forefront, while the gouda supplied a slight buttery quality.
When it comes down to it, Lay's Layers Potato Snacks offer familiar flavors in Sour Cream & Onion and Three Cheese but paired with a different texture from Frito Lay's other snacks that's slightly puffed up and crunchy. That being said, the concept is a bit gimmicky but should be enjoyable to fans of Bugles.
