Pizza Hut's Spicy Lover's Double Pepperoni Pizza features new spicy marinara sauce, Fiery Flakes, and sliced red chili peppers to go with classic pepperoni and crispy-cupped pepperoni.
I paid $13.99 and went with their pan crust.
Opening the box yielded a strong spicy, vinegary smell that's generally not what I want a pizza to smell like. The source seemed to be the sliced red chili peppers, which were pickled and sour as a result. Heat-wise, they weren't any spicier than jalapenos, though (oops, they're actually just pickled red jalapenos).
The spicy marinara seemed to be a less sweet but spicy version of their regular pizza sauce. While the Fiery Flakes looked visually different from just crust red peppers, they basically offered the same result, which is to say they added heat but not flavor.
The odd thing was that there was a bit of a numbing effect to the heat (not quite like Sichuan peppers though) and it made my nose run, but there wasn't much burning beyond a slight sting to my lips. Beside the weirdness of it all, generally you want heat to accentuate flavors, but here it felt like I was tasting less in terms of smoky, savory, and salty notes due to the strong sour bite of the peppers.
The pan crust offered the expected crispy, oily shell and somewhat spongy interior.
Overall, Pizza Hut's Spicy Lover's Double Pepperoni Pizza felt like a lot less than the sum of its parts. It left me feeling less like I ate a spicy pepperoni pizza and more like I ate a spicy, sour fried breadstick. I got a better flavor after picking off the pickled peppers.
