Review: Nestle Toll House Ready-to-Bake Brownies

Nestle Toll House's Ready-to-Bake Brownies feature a tray of ready-to-bake brownie batter with chocolate chips that you just need to place in a pre-heated oven and bake.

The suggested price is $3.99 per 15-oz tray but I received this courtesy of Nestle.

The brownie batter was actually a fairly solid (and slightly lopsided) mass out of the fridge. I'm used to brownie batter being a touch more liquid. I couldn't just shake the unevenness flat as I would be able to if it were more batter-like.

Out of the oven, there was a pretty flaky top layer that gave way to an overly gooey interior (which some might like actually). I left them in for the high end of the time directed on the box (and my oven isn't particularly weak) but it seemed like I could have left them in for longer for a slightly more firm interior. However, the top crust and edges were a bit dry and powdery.

In taste, the brownies were very sweet (the first ingredient is sugar but apparently that's the norm for brownies) and reasonably chocolaty. As the brownies were very gooey, I didn't pick up on any texture difference between the brownie itself and the chocolate chips.

Overall, Nestle Toll House Ready-to-Bake Brownie turned out nicely enough with the expected sweet, chocolaty flavor. It hit the gooey trail a little hard, which left the chewy/cake quality a little lost but I didn't find it off-putting (and could have just baked it longer I think...).
