A 8.47-oz box includes two pies and cost me $4.49.
I tried one at room temperature and the second one hot to see if there was any notable difference beyond temperature.
The room temperature hand pie was pretty soft all around without any crispy bits even at the edges. The filling was actually a little cold inside even though I had it sitting on the counter on a warm summer night.
The warmed/hot hand pie crust was still pretty soft after the suggested 8 to 10 minutes in the oven at 350 degrees. I tried toasting it for a minute after but it didn't crisp up much and I didn't want to risk burning it. Between hot and cold, I'd go with hot as the flavors come across better even though the texture didn't change much. I suppose I did get a little bit of crunch from the sugar sprinkled on top and the crimping of the crust looked really nice.
As is typical of strawberry rhubarb pies, the filling was quite tart with a mellow strawberry flavor. However, it was only moderately sweet, which I enjoyed. There was a good amount of mushy strawberry and rhubarb pieces.
The crust was very buttery and noticeably salty as far as pie crust goes but not weirdly so.
Overall, Trader Joe's Strawberry & Rhubarb Hand Pies turned out relatively well. The buttery flavor of the crust is great and the strawberry rhubarb filling strikes a nice balance between tart and sweet. Though I would prefer a bit of a crispiness to the crust.
