Review: Hungry-Man Double Boneless Fried Chicken Bowl

The Hungry-Man Double Boneless Fried Chicken Bowl features two boneless, fried, white-meat chicken patties served with creamy white cheddar mac and cheese.

A 15-oz box cost me $3.49 on sale.

This came in a Chipotle-like paper bowl that separated at the seam when I pulled the plastic film off the top and, like the Chipotle bowl, collected a bit of condensation on the outside.

As with any fried chicken product out of the microwave, the fried batter/breading here never got crispy and instead offered a mix of soggy and chew so that you basically miss out on the texture of fried chicken but get the taste. The taste was nice with a savory flavor though and a good amount of salt.

Inside, the chicken was a juicy mix of ground chicken and bits of chicken meat so that there's a bit more substance to it than a chicken nugget but not so much as a chicken strip. Like the fried crust, there was an enjoyable savory flavor to it.

The creamy white cheddar mac and cheese fared better in texture out of the microwave with some chew to the pasta and a creamy, mild cheddar sauce that was just enough to coat all the pasta.

Overall, Hungry-Man Double Boneless Fried Chicken Bowl puts forth a mixed bag in terms of taste and texture with the taste coming out better than the texture due (unsurprisingly) to microwave-quality fried chicken (it doesn't look so great either). In terms of taste, both the chicken and mac and cheese were quite salty, which made for a curious pairing. Other than saltiness, I enjoyed the combined flavors in a guilty pleasure kind of way.
