Krispy Kreme's Thanksgiving Mini Pie Donuts consist of four mini donuts: the Mini Pecan Pie Donut, Mini Pumpkin Pie Donut, Mini Lemon Kreme Pie Donut, and Mini Dutch Apple Pie Donut.
A 16-count box includes three of each donut plus three mini Original Glazed donuts and costs $17.49 near me but I received this courtesy of Krispy Kreme.
The Mini Pecan Pie Donut offers a mini Original Glazed donut topped with a gooey butter tart filling, chopped pecans, and snickerdoodle cookie pieces. Between the chopped pecans and cookie pieces, there was a really nice crunch factor here to go with a sweet, molasse note from the butter tart filling. The snickerdoodle cookie pieces were light on the cinnamon notes but added sweetness and a crispy, crumbly texture. The donut itself delivered the signature soft and pillowy texture that Krispy Kreme is known for (this was true across the board).
Mini Pumpkin Pie Donut consists of a mini donut with pumpkin pie filling, dipped in pumpkin pie spiced icing, and topped with snickerdoodle cookie pieces and a dollop of Kreme. While the filling here is described as "pumpkin pie filling," it wasn't the sweet pumpkin custard I was expecting. Instead, it was more like sweet, spiced pumpkin jam with a smooth, jelly-like texture. It didn't have the same richness you get with a pumpkin pie but was still enjoyable in its own way. The cookie pieces added a light crunch, while the icing mostly just added sugar. The Kreme contributed a mild creaminess where encountered.
The Mini Lemon Kreme Pie Donut is a mini donut with lemon filling, dipped in icing, and topped with a dollop of Kreme as well as powdered sugar. There was a sizing discrepancy with my particular batch that lent them a bit of an amusing three-bears effect (i.e. one was relatively small, one was medium [just right?], and one was large). Beyond that was a slightly tart, citrusy, lemon creme filling and an otherwise standard, filled shell donut with various forms of sugar in the icing, Kreme, and powder.
The Mini Dutch Apple Pie Donut features a mini donut with apple filling, dipped in caramel-flavored icing, and topped with cinnamon, snickerdoodle cookie pieces, and a caramel-flavored icing drizzle. This one was probably the most mundane of the bunch as apple-filled donuts are pretty common and this is a slightly gussied-up version in mini form. There was the familiar tart and cinnamon-y filling with the occasional diced apple with the additional note of caramel on top (but mostly just sweetness from the icing) and some crunch from the cookie pieces.
Overall, Krispy Kreme's Thanksgiving Mini Pie Donuts captured the donut-pie concept pretty well (except for some quality control issues regarding in the size of some of them) and were tasty to boot. My favorite of the four donut was definitely Mini Pecan Pie Donut as it's basically a generous amount of crunchy pecan pie filling on top of a mini donut (it was probably also the priciest to make given the amount of pecans).
