Review: Popeyes - Blackened Chicken Sandwich

Popeyes Blackened Chicken Sandwich features a chicken breast filet marinated in blackened seasoning and then fried without breading. The blackened chicken filet is then served with pickles and mayo on a toasted brioche bun.

I paid $4.99 for the sandwich.

As far as my experiences go, my local Popeyes has been pretty generous with their chicken portioning for the regular Chicken Sandwich and that carried over for the Blackened Chicken Sandwich as well. I basically got two small chicken breast filets pressed together to make one big one.

The blackened seasoning permeated the chicken for an enjoyable Cajun flavor throughout that was also fairly salty and mildly spicy (less so than their Blackened Tenders it seemed). Texture-wise, the chicken had a slight crispiness in some bites from being fried but was still moist inside.

The mayo was a bit excessive in my particular sandwich--it was applied to both the top and bottom buns and tended to squeeze out of the edges as I ate. It added a rich tang and creaminess that balanced out the saltiness of the chicken.

The pickles offered a fresher crunch and a lighter sour bite versus your standard fast food pickles.

My particular bun was overly browned (during baking?) and was a bit dry, which suggests it might have been sitting for a while. It was good for a slightly richness and a soft, airy texture but was springy rather than squishy.

Overall, Popeyes Blackened Chicken Sandwich turned out very well in my book. The chicken was full of a distinctive and tasty flavor that isn't available at most fast food chains and there was plenty of it. Popeyes' Blackened Tenders are a go-to order for me at Popeyes and the sandwich version adds a fair bit of complementary flavors to enhance the experience.
