The 7-oz calzone cost me $2.99.
I found this in the deli section at Aldi's and it takes about 2 minutes to heat up in the microwave. I tried a combination of microwaving and air-frying to try and get it a little crispy outside but it didn't take and I didn't want to risk burning the parsley on top.
The dough/bread on the calzone was soft and pillowy with a fairly tight crumb (interior structure).
Inside were maybe five or six smallish meatballs, a bit of tomato sauce, and melted gooey cheese that stretched very nicely. The meatballs had a nice spongy squish to them to go with a coarse grind and a seasoned flavor. The tomato sauce delivered a bit of tang, while the cheese was the most abundant but mostly just tasted and felt like mozzarella--I didn't get the grainy texture I was expecting from ricotta and the Romano notes were very mild.
Overall, Aldi's Mama Cozzi's Meatball Calzone left out some of the textures that I would expect in a calzone and could stand to be a bit meatier but was still enjoyable and comes in a reasonably price. The stretchy cheese was very satisfying.
