The Salisbury steak offered a coarse, loose grind with a soft, slightly spongy, meatball-like texture. It was more delicate than your typical meatball however as it bent a fair amount when I picked it up by one end. Usually, the frozen Salisbury steaks I've tried tended to be a bit firmer and sometimes rubbery so the texture was a bit of pleasant novelty.
In taste, the steak patties had an enjoyable, lightly seasoned, meaty flavor that's buoyed by the gravy.
The onion & mushroom gravy was rich and meaty with notes of savory mushroom, sweet onion, and black pepper. The black pepper note was particularly strong compared to similar frozen meals but was not overbearing.
The chunky mashed potatoes were interesting. Rather than roughly mashed potatoes, they're made with a combination of instant mashed potatoes flakes, water, cream, and diced potatoes. With the way the gravy and any moisture in the bowl mixed with the mashed potatoes, there's a stark contrast between the structure of the diced potatoes and the almost liquid-y smooth mashed potatoes. I wouldn't say it's ideal as it's a bit weird. When I think of chunky mashed potatoes, I picture something a lot thicker and more coherent.
Taken altogether, I found myself liking Hungry-Man's Smothered Salisbury Steak Double Meat Bowl quite a bit as the flavors were good and the Salisbury Steak was interesting in a good way. They would have been better off going with regular mashed potatoes or roasted diced potatoes rather than combining of the two. Points for trying I guess?
