An assorted dozen of the Pumpkin Spice Donuts goes for $20.99 near me but I received this courtesy of Krispy Kreme.
The two new donuts build on the Pumpkin Spice Original Glazed Donut, which was first introduced back in 2016 and brought back seasonally around this time of year since.
The new Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake Swirl Donut takes the Pumpkin Spice Original Glazed Donut and sees it topped with a swirl of pumpkin buttercream icing and cream cheese icing as well as a dusting of cinnamon-sugar. It's similar in appearance to last year's Pumpkin Spice Latte Swirl Donut but whoever made my batch did a nicer job of decorating these.
Over the sweet glazed base of an airy, pillowy yeast donut with a mild pumpkin spice flavor, there's a richer pumpkin flavor from the pumpkin buttercream icing and a creamy tanginess from the cream cheese icing. The icings were fairly thick and smooth in texture. As a fan of pumpkin pie cheesecake, I enjoyed it very much. The dusting of cinnamon-sugar was mostly for aesthetics though.
The new Pumpkin Spice Maple Pecan Donut offers a Pumpkin Spice Original Glazed donut dipped in maple icing and topped with crunchy candied pecan pieces. The maple icing added a light, caramelly flavor that went well with the mild pumpkin spice notes of the donut, while the candied pecan pieces contributed a nice crunch, the expected nutty taste, and just a touch of caramel notes.
The Pumpkin Spice Cake Donut is a glazed, old fashioned cake donut with pumpkin spice. It offered a much denser donut with a more substantial pumpkin spice flavor. While it was covered in the most sweet glaze, the heavier donut balanced out the sweetness.
Overall, the 2023 batch of Krispy Kreme Pumpkin Spice Donuts turned out really well with varying amounts of pumpkin spice paired with different textures and flavors that complement the seasonal fall flavor.
