Review: Wendy's - Sausage, Egg & Cheese English Muffin

Wendy's Sausage, Egg & Cheese English Muffin features a fresh-cracked egg, a grilled sausage patty, and a slice of American cheese on a toasted English muffin with a buttery spread.

The breakfast sandwich cost $4.29.

The new English muffin was soft and pillowy with a fair bit of springiness to it. Flavo-wise, it was slightly sweet and just a bit tangy. It was toasted but could have been toasted some more as, like most fast food breakfast sandwiches, the toasted parts soften quickly enclosed in the heat and moisture of wrapper.

The new buttery spread was only spread on the top half of the English muffin and I couldn't really get a  taste of it until I started eating the sandwich upside down. Upside down, it was great and offered the expected creamy, buttery notes but also an extra savory quality that was most welcome.

Unlike the toasted English muffin, the egg managed some crispy edges to go with a mild flavor, while the smoothly-ground sausage patty delivered a rich meatiness and a notable hit of black pepper (to the point that the sandwich was touched with a hint of spicy heat).

The cheese was nicely melted and was good for the familiar mild and creamy flavor of American cheese.

Taken altogether, Wendy's Sausage, Egg & Cheese English Muffin was executed quite well except for the placement of the buttery spread. It's not much different from the Classic Sausage, Egg & Cheese Sandwich that it replaces but the both the new English muffin and buttery spread make for an upgrade over that sandwich. Still, between getting Wendy's biscuit or their English muffin, I'd opt for the biscuit as English muffins are generally easier to come by and prepare. The biscuit sandwich ordered with the new buttery spread might be nice.
