The single Jack in the Box Birria Grilled Cheese features seasoned, shredded beef birria and American cheese sandwiched between two round slices of toasted sourdough bread. A side of birria dipping sauce is included.
The Double Birria Grilled Cheese (pictured) takes a bit of a Big Mac approach to a grilled cheese sandwich as it offers a double portion of seasoned, shredded beef birria and melted American cheese split between three slices of toasted sourdough bread rounds. It also comes with side of birria dipping sauce.
Suggested pricing for the new test items comes out to $5 for the single Birria Grilled Cheese and $9 for a Double Birria Grilled Cheese. You can also get either sandwich as part of a combo meal with fries and a fountain drink.
Birria is a Mexican dish of seasoned, stewed beef. Given the location of the test, it looks like Jack in the Box is trying to see if the sandwich can hold its own against an abundance of Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine options.
As far as major fast food chains go, birria has seen recently some in-roads at chains specializing in Mexican-American cuisine such Qdoba, El Pollo Loco, Del Taco, and Taco Bell. A birria offering from Jack in the Box would mark a first for a fast food chain that focusses more on burgers and fries (although Jack in the Box does serve a rather eclectic menu that includes items such as the Fajita Pita, Tiny Tacos, and Egg Rolls)
