Hostess Meltamors features a mini chocolaty cake with a melting center, topped with a chocolate-flavored drizzle. They come in two varieties: Chocolate Creamy Caramel and Double Chocolate.
A 9.31-oz box costs around $4.89 but I received these courtesy of Hostess.
The Meltamors are about half the size of a Hostess Cupcake. You could reasonably pop one in your mouth (although you might not want to if it's heated up).
The box suggests popping these in the microwave for 5 seconds to melt the center. They came out relatively warm with a liquid center that spilled forth when I cut them in half. You should be careful eating these in case the center drips down.
The Chocolate Creamy Caramel and Double Chocolate varieties only differ in their respective centers. Chocolate Creamy Caramel comes with a caramel center, while Double Chocolate comes with a chocolaty center. Both are very sweet but mild in flavor. If you don't warm the Meltamors, the centers end up feeling like a soft cake frosting.
The chocolate-flavored drizzle on top had a slightly waxy frosting feel when cool but melted along with the center when warmed. It had a slightly creamy and light chocolaty note to it.
The cake portion was sticky and gooey in a way that stuck to my teeth and the roof of my mouth. It was dense and soft but still cake-like. It actually had the strongest chocolate flavor out of the various components of the snack cakes. There was a slightly bittersweet chocolaty flavor to the cake.
Overall, Hostess Meltamors made for an enjoyable and convenient lava-cake-like experience. It's not nearly as rich or flavorful as a lava cake but it's affordable and quick and easy to prepare.
