I paid $2.99 for a 6.35-oz pouch.
The concept here is to offer a boba drink as a snackable, bite-sized dessert.
The mochi/rice cake on the outside was dusted with starch to prevent sticking and had a soft, elastic, chewy texture. In the center, the tapioca boba had a slightly firmer texture with a bit more bounce. If you've never tried mochi, it's similar to a gummy candy in texture but with less springiness and more stretchiness.
Despite its brown coloring, the mochi didn't appear to contain any brown sugar flavor although it is very lightly sweet.
The caramelized brown sugar kicks in from the boba pearl in the center except it's less like a kick and more like a nudge. For added nuance, there's a thin creamy coating that separated the boba from the mochi and it was good for a mellow richness.
While boba is typically paired with milk tea, there's no tea involved here.
All-in-all, Trader Joe's Brown Sugar Boba Mochi makes for a pleasantly sweet dessert with dual levels of squishy, stretchy textures with a hint of cream.
