Chick-fil-A's Maple Pepper Bacon Sandwich features a lemon herb-marinated, grilled chicken breast filet served with pepper jack cheese, green leaf lettuce, bacon tossed in a brown sugar-pepper blend, and sweet and spicy pickles, on a toasted maple-flavored brioche bun.
It costs $10.39 at my nearest Chick-fil-A but I received this courtesy of Chick-fil-A. You can also get it with a crispy chicken filet (for $9.69) or a spicy filet (for $10.19).
The bacon offered both crispy and chewy bits here and there. There were two small pieces but they sported enough brown sugar to taste like candy. It was peppered heavily to the point of giving a mild spicy kick.
The lightly buttered bun was soft and airy with a slightly richer quality than Chick-fil-A's standard bun. There was a bit of a King's Hawaiian bread feel to it. It exhibited just a hint of maple sweetness that echoed the sugar of the bacon.
The pickles were lightly sweet and spicy with an enjoyable watery crunch and welcomed acidity. The green leaf lettuce was relatively fresh and added some texture.
The grilled chicken breast was long but a bit short in width, which left me with a few bites of mostly chicken and a few bites of mostly bread. The texture of the chicken was very nice with a meaty bite that remained juicy. In terms of flavor, it was heavily seasoned and tinged with just a hint of tang and lemon.
The pepper jack cheese was creamy and mellow but only partially melted. It didn't taste spicy and lacked any jalapeno or habanero notes.
Usually, I include a cross-section picture but I forgot to take one. I actually cut the sandwich in half with the intention of taking a picture but then decided that I should eat half while it was still warm for the best experience. Unfortunately, while I was eating the half and mulling over what to say about it for this review, it slipped my mind that I hadn't taken the photo... so yeah, that's what happened. Sorry to all of you who really like the cross-section pictures.
Overall, there's a lot going on with Chick-fil-A's Maple Pepper Bacon Sandwich and it's well made for a fast-food chicken sandwich. That being said, the sweetness was strong to the detriment of the other components and less would have been more here.
