Review: Krispy Kreme - Passport to Paris Donuts

A box of a dozen donuts from Krispy Kreme's Passport to Paris Collection.

Krispy Kreme's Passport to Paris Donuts are a trio of donuts inspired by Parisian desserts. They include the Raspberry & Vanilla Crème Donut, Crème Brûlée Donut, and Double Chocolate Éclair Donut.

A Passport to Paris Specialty Dozen costs $23.99 at the closest Krispy Kreme shop but I received this courtesy of Krispy Kreme. All the donuts offered the same airy, soft dough that Krispy Kreme is known for.

The Raspberry & Vanilla Crème Donut is an Original Glazed donut topped with raspberry icing, cookie pieces, and a dollop of vanilla Kreme. It's not exactly clear what French dessert the donut takes its cues from but maybe Raspberry jam-filled sables?

The Raspberry & Vanilla Crème Donut delivered the strongest flavor as both the icing and the decorated drizzle offered powerful notes of sweet raspberry. At the same time, the vanilla Kreme dollop and cookies provided a mellow counterbalance. Between the glaze and the icing, it's very sweet though.

The Crème Brûlée Donut features an unglazed shell donut filled with crème brûlée Kreme and topped with crème brûlée caramel icing and caramelized sugar crunch.

The toppings for the Creme Brulee Donut were more like caramel than creme brulee-like. They lacked the darker caramel notes you get caramelizing sugar until it's almost (but not quite) burnt. Additionally, the caramelized sugar crunch wasn't crunchy at all. I remember Krispy Kreme once offered a Creme Brulee donut with a torched sugar topping in Indonesia in the past and this seemed like a missed opportunity for that. The creme inside was nice though with an enjoyable creamy custardy flavor.

The Double Chocolate Éclair Donut is an unglazed shell donut filled with chocolate custard Kreme and topped with chocolate icing and chocolate crisp pearls. The chocolate crisp pearls were scattered haphazardly compared to the more defined lines of the press photos. They offered a very light, slightly stale crispiness and mild chocolate notes.

The chocolate custard Kreme was somewhat runny and offered a moderate chocolate flavor tinged with a be of caramel. For the most part, the Double Chocolate Éclair Donut felt like a run-of-the-mill chocolate creme-filled, chocolate iced donut.

Overall, Krispy Kreme's Passport to Paris Donuts were nice enough as far as donuts go but I'm not sure anyone would guess they were inspired by "iconic Parisian desserts."
