The new burger is a global menu item that was previously tested in Portugal and select locations in Canada. It is now available nationwide in Canada and Portugal as the "Big Arch" and in Germany as the "The M."
The Big Arch features two quarter-pound beef patties, three slices of white processed cheese, crispy-fried onions, slivered onions, pickles, lettuce, and new Big Arch sauce (which is described as a "tangy burger sauce") served on a toasted sesame and poppy seed bun. Judging by the ingredients, the new burger is positioned as a better, bigger Big Mac. The two burgers have a similar combination of beef, cheese, onions, pickles, lettuce, and a special sauce (both mayo-based burger sauces) but the Big Arch comes with more beef, more cheese (of a similar but different type), two types of onion (crispy and fresh onions versus the dehydrated onions of the Big Mac), and the addition of poppy seed on the bun. It also does away with the middle bun.
According to a positive review from Daily Hive, the burger costs $10 in Canada (~$7.37 US). If the pricing falls in line with a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese, it would cost $6.99 here in Los Angeles ($10.89 as part of a combo meal).
If all goes well, you can expect to see the Big Arch on the McDonald's menu globally (including in the US) alongside the Big Mac and Quarter Pounder.
This isn't the first time McDonald's has strived to add a burger tier above the Big Mac and Quarter Pounder with Cheese. Other similarly positioned burgers that have fallen into the dustbin of history include the infamous Arch Deluxe, Angus Third-Pounder, and Signature Crafted Recipes line.
