Review: Jack in the Box - Mummy Wrapped Monster Taco

Jack in the Box's Mummy Wrapped Monster Taco features a Jack in the Box Monster Taco nestled in a soft flour tortilla with a layer of nacho cheese sauce and bacon holding the taco to the tortilla. It's basically Jack in the Box's version of a Taco Bell Double Decker but with a layer of nacho cheese and bacon instead of beans.

I paid $3 for the Mummy Wrapped Monster Taco.

The Monster Taco is almost the same as a regular Jack in the Box taco but slightly taller and mostly longer. It contains the same seasoned taco meat, lettuce, American cheese, and taco sauce in a crispy corn tortilla shell. If you've never had one, I find that people tend to fall into two camps: it's either disgusting or disgustingly good. As someone who subscribes to the latter camp, there's something compelling about the greasy, crunchy blend of savory meat paste, melted American cheese, watery lettuce, and spicy taco sauce. It also helps that the regular version is still, despite the passing of over 10 years, dirt-cheap at two for 99 cents (when ordering online).

As far as the new bits go, the flour tortilla was big enough to cover a regular taco but left about a fifth of the Monster Taco bare. The tortilla was not good. It was soft and pliable but chewy and hard to bite through, which made for messing eating.

Whoever made my Mummy Wrapped Monster Taco did not skimp on the nacho cheese sauce. There was a generous portion that oozed out as I ate. It offered a creamy and mild cheddar note as well as quite a hefty note of salt (partially due to the quantity). There was a good amount of bacon involved as well. It wasn't crispy but added a smoky note along with more salt.

Overall, Jack in the Box's Mummy Wrapped Monster Taco was just okay for me. While the bacon and cheese were nice enough, I wouldn't say they improved on the base of the Monster Taco. Additionally, I couldn't shake the thought that the whole thing would have been better served if they just put the nacho sauce and bacon in the taco and did away with the subpar tortilla.
