Review: Watermelon and Sour Apple Gushers

A box of Watermelon and Sour Apple Gushers.

Watermelon and Sour Apple Gushers are fruit-flavored gummy candies with a "gushy" liquid center. Each pouch contains a mix of red (Watermelon) Gushers and green (Sour Apple) Gushers.

A 4.8-oz box of six pouches normally costs $2.49 near me but I received this courtesy of the Gushers brand.

It's been a while since I've eaten these but I remember them being squisher and more messy. Messy in that the sweet, syrupy liquid had a tendency to leak out. I don't know if they changed up the recipe over the years but these Gushers seemed more firm and sturdy and less squishy. They were closer to Swedish Fish in texture (starch-based) than a gummy worm (gelatin-based). As with Swedish Fish, they also liked to stick to my teeth as I chewed on them. Unlike Swedish Fish and gummy worms, Gushers have a gem-like shape with a shiny sheen to them.

Flavor-wise, both the Watermelon and Sour Apple flavors reminded me of Jolly Ranchers, which is to say not like the actual fruit and more like flavored candy if that makes sense. The flavor of the shell was very mild while the liquid inside was more intense in both flavor and sweetness. The hit of sourness from the center of the Sour Apple flavor was particularly refreshing.

I rather like Watermelon and Sour Apple Gushers. They offer familiar flavors but with an interesting combination of juice and chewy candy.
