Review: Domino's - 5-Cheese Mac & Cheese

Domino's 5-Cheese Mac & Cheese next to a quarter.

Domino's 5-Cheese Mac & Cheese features penne pasta baked with cheddar, American, Parmesan-Asiago, mozzarella, and Alfredo sauce.

An order costs $9.99 at my local Domino's but there was a 20% off coupon that brought it down to $7.99. It's also available as part of the chain's "buy two or more" for $6.99 mix-and-match deal (which is $7.99 here in Los Angeles).

The 5-Cheese Mac & Cheese is the same size as the pizza chain's other Oven-Baked Pasta items. It came in a round foil container that was placed in a Small (10-inch) pizza box (to keep from burning my hands I'm guessing).

Initially, it looked like a sea of cheese with a few odds and ends of pasta sticking out but thankfully, there was a respectable amount of pasta under the surface. That said, the portion was pretty shallow in depth but decently hefty in weight.

From what I could tell, the sauce was mostly cheese. It seemed like there was just enough Alfredo sauce mixed in to hold it together so that it didn't separate between solids and oil. The cheese was stretchy and gooey with probably the most cheese pull I can recall getting from anything at Domino's. It was rich, creamy, and full of flavor. I could taste various notes of the different cheeses. Between the cheese and the Alfredo sauce, it was very salty though. Mac and cheese is typically pretty salty but it was a level above.

There were some burnt edges where the surface of the mac & cheese contacted the foil but very little browning on top, which could have added an extra layer of flavor.

The penne pasta was tender but not mushy. It held the sauce well although I'm pretty sure any pasta would have done a good job of holding the rather thick cheese sauce.

For the most part, Domino's 5-Cheese Mac & Cheese was surprisingly good. It's rich, flavorful, and very cheesy. However, with the richness, flavor fatigue set in rather quickly. There's an option to add bacon and/or jalapenos which may have helped but would have also thrown more salt in. Some breadcrumbs or other crunchy bits would have been nice to change it up a little texture-wise.
