Review: Jack in the Box Sourdough Smashed Jack

Side view of Jack in the Box's Sourdough Smashed Jack.

Jack in the Box's Sourdough Smashed Jack features a quarter-pound smashed beef patty, American cheese, pickles, grilled onions, and Boss Sauce (a burger sauce that's also found on the Smashed Jack) served on grilled sourdough rounds.

I paid $8.59 for one and it's basically the Smashed Jack but one grilled sourdough rather than a brioche bun. For whatever reason, they fully wrapped the burger and then placed it in a clamshell box.

The beef patty offered a robust meaty flavor. It was thick but just a tad short in width to achieve full bread coverage. The grind was a little too fine for a burger. There was a nice browned crust on the patty but none of the crunch you might get from a smashed patty. The temperature was warm rather than hot.

The sourdough rounds were not sour at all and only lightly crispy. They were mostly soft and chewy.

The American cheese was thoroughly melted and gooey.

The pickles and onions combined to provide a watery crunch. The onions were lightly sweet while the pickles added a dose of acidity. Tying it together with a combination of savory and sweet notes was the Boss Sauce.

Overall, Jack in the Box's Sourdough Smashed Jack presented a solid burger that felt pricey for what you get.
