The limited-time pizza is inspired by caozaiguo, a green dumpling served to celebrate the Qingming Festival. Caozaiguo can come in sweet or savory versions and Pizza Hut's Grass Turtle Pizza looks to incorporate aspects of both.
The Grass Turtle Pizza features a turtle-shaped pizza base that's stuffed with cheese. The body of the "turtle" is topped with sautéed shredded radish and rice, while the feet are stuffed with a sweet red bean filling. The green shell, head, and feet are made of thin squares of chewy mugwort mochi (like the skin of a caozaiguo). Riding the turtle is a puff-pastry snake filled with cheese.
The turtle-and-snake theme is based on Xuanwu (or Genbu in Japan), one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations (Ed. note - A Ninja Turtle also comes to mind). It represents the north and the winter season.
Pizza Hut Taiwan offered a similar pizza around this time last year (minus the snake).
